Bucket List destination
Here in Oregon, we have a neat version of Stonehenge in Maryhill, Washington, along the Columbia River Gorge. Ever since I was a young lady, I always dreamed of crossing the seas to see the real deal!
Steven and I decided that we could not pass up the opportunity to see this magnificent piece of history, while we were nearby in London. So with a map in hand and the rental car at our mercy, we set forth on to our destination of Stonehenge.
Keep reading for some tips we thought fellow travelers would like!
Plan your Trip
This may seem like an obvious tip, but it is the most important of the bunch. We would not recommend driving the distance if you are thinking of this destination on a whim (for those that are closer in proximity). The traffic to get there was pretty slow, so patience is a must! We arrived in the late afternoon. If we had to do it again, we would have definitely chose a session in the morning! Best advice, map it out and do not rush your time there!
Purchase your tickets early
We purchased our tickets online through the English Heritage site. Only a certain amount of visitors are allowed each day, so securing your spot is essential in ensuring that you are able to check Stonehenge off your bucket list! Even though we were late to our original ticket time, they were kind and let us in anyhow!
Enjoy the scenery
You made it here! Enjoy all that Stonehenge has to offer! This massive monument is surrounded by beautiful English countryside, so soak up the beauty. We took many photos from different views of the rocks. There were quite a bit of people there, but we found that many did not walk around the entire structure. This left us with quite a bit of space to take photos. The free headsets also add the informational touch most people are looking for outside of a guide.
Visit the gift shop
One thing about Stonehenge that we weren't really anticipating was the fun gift shop. Take a moment to explore the offerings inside. While we were there, a wine tasting event was happening! In addition to that, they have keepsakes for you to remember your experience by (besides all the photos you'll capture!) On this particular excursion, we brought home an ornament to hang on our future Christmas tree for years to come.
We ask our lovely guests, have you been here before? What was your favorite memory? Share your thoughts below in the comments!
