Choosing Family-Friendly Accommodations

When it comes to where you lay your heads at night, this decision can make or break your trip — especially with kids. In Phuket, you’ll want to look for properties that were practically built with families in mind. Think: kid’s clubs (hello, a little alone time for the adults!), pools with shallow areas for the little splashers, and connecting rooms so everyone stays close without cramped quarters. Another consideration (and more privacy) is to rent an entire apartment or holiday villa. Plenty of these are perfect for larger families and many come with private pools with full kitchens.

Location matters just as much as amenities. Staying near the beach or family-friendly attractions means less time in traffic and more time actually enjoying the island. Phuket traffic is no joke, so the closer you are to what you want to do, the better.

Pro Tip: Before you book, read through reviews specifically from other families and search for properties that speak to catering to families. They’ll give you the real scoop on things like noise levels, whether the pool is actually baby-safe, and if the staff is accommodating with little ones.

Packing Essentials for Traveling with Kids

Packing for a family trip is basically its own event, isn’t it? But nail your packing list and you’ll be setting yourself up for a much smoother experience once you land.

Here’s what we’d never leave home without for a destination like Phuket:

  • Sunscreen (and lots of it — the Thai sun is intense!)
  • Bug repellent (the mosquito situation is real, friends)
  • Rash guards (because the sun is intense and a little extra protection never hurt anyone)
  • Snacks and entertainment for travel days — books, tablets, small toys, whatever keeps the peace
  • A solid first aid kit along with any medications your family regularly uses/needs
  • Comfort items — this is especially important if you have a kiddo that thrives off of routine/familiarity

The goal is to be prepared so you can focus less on scrambling for things and more on soaking in all that Phuket has to offer. Trust us, future-you will be so grateful!

Here’s the honest truth: getting around Phuket with kids requires a little extra planning, but it is absolutely doable. The island can be busy and traffic can test your patience, so building flexibility into your days is key.

When planning your itinerary, look specifically for child-friendly restaurants (many places in tourist areas have high chairs and kid menus), reliable transportation options, and activities that fit your kids’ ages and energy levels. A toddler’s Phuket looks different from a ten-year-old’s Phuket, and that’s totally fine — lean into it!

Our biggest advice: don’t try to do or plan everything out. Slow down, live the island life, and let the kids set the pace some days. You’ll find the trip feels so much more relaxed and enjoyable for the whole family.

Keeping Kids Entertained in Phuket

Now for the fun part! Phuket is genuinely wonderful for kids, and you’ll have no shortage of things to do.

Hit the Beaches — Phuket’s beaches are next-level beautiful and perfect for families. Kids can build sandcastles, splash in the clear blue water, or try snorkeling for the first time. Some beaches are calmer than others (great for little ones), so do a little research on which beach suits your family’s vibe.

Explore the Islands — A boat tour to nearby islands is an absolute must. It’s one of those experiences the whole family will still be talking about years from now. Bonus: kids LOVE being on a boat.

Visit Wildlife Sanctuaries — If you’ve got animal-loving kiddos (and honestly, who doesn’t?), Phuket has some incredible wildlife experiences. Look for ethical elephant sanctuaries, marine life aquariums, and animal conservation centers. These visits are as educational as they are exciting — a total win. Max (our oldest) still talks about feeding elephants when we traveled to Phuket — it really does stick with them.

Splash Around at a Water Park — When you need a guaranteed great day, a water park delivers every time. Thrilling rides for the bigger kids, gentler slides for the younger ones, and tired, happy children by the end of it. You’re welcome.

Dive Into Thai Culture — This is one of our favorite things to do as a traveling family. Take the kids to a traditional Thai show or sign up for a family cooking class! Learning to make authentic Thai dishes together is such a fun and enriching way to connect with the local culture and community.

Final Thoughts

Phuket with kids is genuinely one of the most rewarding travel experiences you can give your family. Yes, it takes a little extra planning. Yes, there will probably be a meltdown or two (been there!). But the memories you’ll create — building sandcastles on turquoise beaches, experiencing Thai culture firsthand, watching your kids light up at every new adventure — are absolutely priceless.
